Howard Crosby Butler was an archaeologist and professor of the history of architecture at Princeton University. In his early student days he played leading roles in the first productions of the newly founded Triangle Club and helped organize the college's third eating club, Tiger Inn, whose clubhouse he later designed. Five archaeological expeditions, between 1910 and 1914, to the site of Sardis, located in the west of modern Turkey, which were conducted by Howard Crosby Butler. Butler had planned a long-term effort, but the outbreak of World War I in 1914 interrupted the work of the expedition. Butler died on his way back from Turkey in 1921.
